چکیده

We present extensive and accurate calculations for the excited-state spectrum of spin-polarized neutral helium in a range of magnetic field strengths up to 10 G. Of considerable interest to models of magnetic white dwarf stellar atmospheres, we also present results for the dipole strengths of the low-lying transitions among these states. Our methods rely on a systematically saturated basis set approach to solving the HartreeFock self-consistent field equations, combined with an ‘‘exact’’ stochastic method to estimate the residual basis set truncation error and electron correlation effects. We also discuss the applicability of the adiabatic approximation to strongly magnetized multielectron atoms. @S1050-2947~99!02504-4#

Progress in Modeling Magnetic White Dwarfs

The analysis of magnetic white dwarfs has made considerable progress since the last white dwarf workshop: 1. It could be shown that neither the magnetic white dwarf Grw +70◦8247 (Jordan & Friedrich, 2001) nor LP 790−29 (Jordan & Friedrich 2002, Beuermann et al. 2002) are fast rotators (P < 10 min) but are rotating slowly (P > 20 years). 2. Automatic fitting procedures have been developed which ...

Released-phase quantum Monte Carlo method

The correlation function Monte Carlo method for calculating ground and excited state properties is extended to complex Hamiltonians and used to calculate the spectrum of neutral helium in a wide range of magnetic fields, a system of particular interest in astrophysics. Correlation functions in imaginary time are evaluated for a set of trial functions over a random walk whose dynamics is governe...

Evidence for helium in the magnetic white dwarf GD 229

The nature of the strong absorption features in the white dwarf GD 229 has been a real mystery ever since it was found to be magnetic in 1974. All attempts to explain the spectrum by line components of hydrogen failed. With the first sets of newly calculated line data for He I in a strong magnetic field we could identify most of the absorption structures in the spectrum with stationary line com...

Electron Dynamics in Quantum Dots on Helium Surface

We study single-electron quantum dots on helium surface created by electrodes submerged into the helium. The intradot potential is electrostatically controlled. We find the electron energy spectrum and identify relaxation mechanisms. Strong in-plane confinement significantly slows down electron relaxation. Energy relaxation is due primarily to coupling to phonons in helium. Dephasing is determi...

Termination Shock Asymmetries as Seen by the Voyager Spacecraft: the Role of the Interstellar Magnetic Field and Neutral Hydrogen

We show that asymmetries of the termination shock due to the influence of the interstellar magnetic field (ISMF) are considerably smaller in the presence of neutral hydrogen atoms, which tend to symmetrize the heliopause, the termination shock, and the bow shock due to charge exchange with charged particles. This leads to a much stronger restriction on the ISMF direction and its strength. We de...
